A Town Built Around Water
Safety Harbor's history centers on Espiritu Santo Springs. The water was first bottled and sold, then a spa and hotel were built over the springs, and the Safety Harbor Resort and Spa site was named a historical landmark by the U.S. Department of the Interior in 1964 and a Florida heritage landmark in 1997[1].
We are not making any claims about the water. We do find that owners in a spa town often want a shower that feels like one: a large rain head, a handheld spray, a bench to sit on, good lighting, and enough room to enjoy it.

Building a Spa-Style Shower
A shower remodel keeps the existing footprint, or enlarges it a little, and rebuilds everything inside it. For a spa feel, we plan the valve for more than one outlet, place a bench away from the direct spray, add a niche for bottles, and choose tile and glass that let in light. If you want a steam shower, the walls, ceiling and door have to be planned for it from the start.
Because most homes here are single-family and owner-occupied[2], you control the design without an association in the way. Permits go to Pinellas County Building and Development Review Services[3], and for flood-zone homes the cost counts toward the 49% threshold[4].

Can I add a steam shower?
Yes, if it is planned from the start. Steam needs a sealed enclosure and a ceiling designed for it.
Will a rain head work with my water pressure?
Usually. We check pressure and pipe size before choosing outlets.
Do I need a permit?
Yes, when the valve or drain changes. Pinellas County issues it.
Is the Safety Harbor pier open again?
The city began rebuilding the pier in July 2025, with completion targeted for the end of December 2026[5].
Can a bench be added to an existing shower?
Yes, during a remodel. A built-in bench is framed and waterproofed with the rest of the shower.
